Where we're going
Committed Christians have been building structures to meet the spiritual needs of the Union Community since the early 1800’s when families came together to form the church congregation. The early efforts resulted in the construction of the first church located in what is now the Champion Forest Development on Cuthbertson Road in Waxhaw, NC. Since that time three additional churches, two of which burned and one relocated and a fellowship hall have been constructed to meet the spiritual needs of the community. After moving from the original site to the present location at 6315 Newtown Road, Waxhaw, church members have met the challenges of providing facilities to form the center piece for a worship place for community Christians.
Over the years the church has faced many challenges and is now faced with a new challenge of having space to accommodate the membership and projected growth. In 2008 the congregation made an important decision to construct a building to meet the growing needs of the congregation. A building committee was selected to provide leadership for the project. The committee has evaluated church goals and community needs to determine the type of facility needed. After the evaluation process was completed, an architect was employed to develop a master plan and building design. The concept, a family life center, will accommodate a wide variety of activities and is now moving forward with a fund-raising campaign to finance the project. In order to begin construction on the project, we must raise 25-30% of the building cost. Past generations reached out in faith and met the challenge of meeting the spiritual needs of the community. Today’s members now have the opportunity to meet a new challenge, a challenge of providing a comfortable and welcoming environment for our congregation and changing community.
Members at Union UMC are excited about the opportunity to grow and bring into their fellowship Christians that can be the hands, feet and voice of Christ. As our mission states, we equip and prepare individuals to share and show the love of Christ. You are invited and welcomed to come and share in reaching the goal of building a new family life center, a reality that will assist the church in sharing and showing the love of Christ. Come and join us in this exciting venture.
